Mia Meitin-Reflection 1

Public speaking for me has always been a weakness. Just the thought of everyones eyes on me, judging everything that comes out of my mouth and internally critiquing what Im saying is enough to make be back out. Though it is a big challenge for me, in this public speaking class so far I have learned different ways to cope with the nerves and how to better improve my speaking skills. Just from this first assignment I feel I have learned so much. Everyone did a great job thoroughly explaining their given topics. Stepping into this class was a big challenge, but now even with the short time in this class I can say Im already more confident in myself.  I was nervous starting this class but everyone has done a great job at being welcoming. That being said Im excited to continue learning about public speaking and better increase my skills.    via GIPHY For the first assignment in this class, we had to compose a presentation with your group based on the chapters you were gi...

Tamara Chocoy - Reflection 1

Coming into this class I did not know what to expect. All I can say I know by the time I leave this class I would have leveled up not only as a speaker but a leader. In just this first presentation I have learned a lot. I've gotten to see how others react and share information. All my classmates understood the assignment and clearly explained their chapters and I've learned a lot from their performance and information. My classmates have taught me a lot in just the little time of this class.      I was very nervous that from the jump we have a group presentation but even from my group I have learned a lot. From my fellow group and I - I have learned how to better manage speech anxiety, the craft of public, and how to better understand/listen when it comes to public speaking. Managing speech anxiety is a big one for me. I now better understand that being prepared for your speech and not being uncertain in your speech will help you build your confidence...

Victoria Orono-Reflection 1

This class has been the perfect start to my college experience. It has really helped me understand different perspectives and feel less shy and anxious around new people. Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much, and I feel truly grateful for this opportunity. Growing up, I was always surrounded by public speaking at my church. I watched as parents gave speeches about finances, marriage, and personal growth. It was nerve-wracking to see them up there, but it also made me curious about speaking in front of others. I started participating in Christmas plays as a dancer while my close friends took on the main roles. Watching them perform inspired me to think about stepping into a lead role myself, even though I felt hesitant at first. As a child, I kept to myself because I often felt inferior. That feeling faded a bit over time, but it came back in my teenage years because I hadn’t fully dealt with it. Participating in Christmas shows helped me let go of some of that insecurity. Whil...

Gabriella Chavez- Reflection 1

Public speaking has always been difficult for me whether in front of classmates or as small as going through a drive-through and saying your order. I don't know if it was the thought of people criticizing me because I stuttered or pronounced something wrong but everything about it made me embarrassed. It can be very difficult to present well-organized ideas while also feeling under pressure to do well, especially for individuals who haven't had much practice. As I sit here and write this reflection in the comfort of my bed I can already feel the nervousness of having to present this in class. For the first assignment of the semester, each group was assigned chapters, and within our groups, we evenly distributed the lessons, my group was assigned group 1. Our chapter was based on important tricks for a great presentation. The value of developing presenting skills and good public speaking cannot be emphasized in both personal and professional settings. In today's fast-pa...
